Fairfield Sister City Program Holds 2nd Annual Japan Summerfest Fundraiser

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Fairfield Sister City Program Holds 2nd Annual Japan Summerfest Fundraiser

Fairfield, CA – July 14, 2014 – The Fairfield-Nirasaki Sister City Program will hold its 2nd annual “Japan Summerfest” fundraising event on Saturday, August 16. It will run from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Fairfield Community Center at 1000 Kentucky Street.

There will be exciting performances and activities for all ages, as well as great food provided by Texas Roadhouse. Performers include a local traditional Japanese dance group, as well as Okinawan dance and taiko groups. Children and families can learn origami, calligraphy, and many other aspects of traditional Japanese culture at our numerous activity and game tables. Experts on bonsai cultivation and ikebana, the art of flower arrangement, will be in attendance as well. There will also be a raffle of local and Japanese goods.

At the 1st annual “Japan Summerfest” fundraising event held last year, the Fairfield-Nirasaki Sister City Program welcomed over 100 guests for three hours of amazing experiences that helped strengthen the bonds between our community and our sister city in Japan. The proceeds from the event made it possible for the Program to host six Japanese students and a chaperone this past winter, continuing a 27 year-old tradition of winter and summer student exchanges between Fairfield and Nirasaki.

The Fairfield-Nirasaki Sister City Program is a non-profit organization that is run purely by volunteers from our local community who want to cultivate cultural understanding between Americans and Japanese at a citizen level. The program began 43 years ago as a basic sister city relationship between the cities of Fairfield, California, and Nirasaki, Yamanashi, Japan. Since then, for the past 27 years, we have sent adults or students each year from the Fairfield area to Nirasaki, and have received adults and students from Japan in return. The program currently receives no outside assistance and is solely dependent on donations.
